eBikes are about to change – new segments of eBikes
eBikes are one of the best and most immediate solutions to many transportation problems in the world today. And we are expecting exponential growth in the very near future.
There is a wide range of eBike models to choose from. They are often grouped by very rigid and ‘technical’ categories – such as whether the bike is a pedal-assist or has a throttle and whether the bike has a specific application – City/Urban, Trekking (Road eBike, Gravel eBike, City eBike, E-mountain Bikes/e-MTB), and so on.
This model categorization has often hindered the purchase decision process and confused consumers.
2023 will most likely mark a new way to segment eBikes – offering more consumer-friendly categories, which will not only facilitate the purchase decision process, but also attract ever more potential first time buyers.
What are new segments of eBikes like?
Based on our wide-ranging mobility studies and recent consumer reports, eBikes will be divided according to the following –
Economy eBike – friendly price
With the increasing costs of daily life, there is less room for many households to splash out on an expensive eBike. Consumers are going to look for an eBike in a more favourable price range of about 1,000-1,500 Euro. Budget eBikes are equipped with a front hub motor, which a lot of people claim to be a barrier. But, for those who are making short trips, this budget eBike could just be their best friend.
Can-Do-All eBike – more expensive and heavier
An all-round eBike is usually equipped with a mid-drive motor and in-tube battery, disc brakes and a more high-endfinish. They tend to be heavier and made from more premium parts, as well as having a more advanced motor connection and more functions and coloured displays. They will ensure a much more comfortable ride and can be customized in terms of design, tyre width, battery capacity and safety accessories.
Super Compact eBike – practical and safe
The Dutch call them the ‘Wardrobe bike’ – a small (but not foldable) eBike with 20” tyre, which is becoming very popular. Not only it is loved by people with trailers and campers, it is also a favourite among people living in compact spaces and in houses with no elevator, not to mention people taking them on a train or in the car boot. They are very simple to use and easy to step on and off.
Cool eBike – the showstopper
The age of eBike cyclists is dropping drastically. School pupils, young-adults, and many in their 40s have discovered the eBike. Some newcomers show very high interest in stylish versions of the eBike, which tend to have a trendy appearance with a hint of a retro look. They are often offered with a single speed and have no mud flap or luggage carrier – and the battery is always subtly integrated into the frame.
Transport eBike – better steering and more compact
These eBikes are the nearest replacement to the car. New technologies and innovations have made them more compact with more attention paid to the tilt function of the front wheels. They can carry a lot and yet they are more manoeuvrable and safer on the road than ever.
